Dynamic Rupture Front Interaction on 3D Planar Fault
نویسنده
چکیده
We demonstrate a rupture front focusing phenomenon at the initial stage of earthquake, which causes high slip rate pulses and therefore generates high frequency seismic waves. In this computation, we assume a pre-slip region, where stress has already lowered quasi-statically to the dynamic friction level. And due to the pre-slip, we suppose a stress concentration at the edge of pre-slip area. Then a dynamic rupture starts at a certain point on the rim of the pre-slip region. We could observe a rupture front focusing that causes high slip rate pulse. We also observed a high frequency pulse in ground velocity seismogram. We computed a double pre-slip model, where two pre-slip region exist, and found that multiple pre-slips enhances this eeect.

Modeling Dynamic Rupture in a 3D Earthquake Fault Model
We propose a fourth-order staggered-grid finite-difference method to study dynamic faulting in three dimensions. The method uses an implementation of the boundary conditions on the fault that allows the use of general friction models including slip weakening and rate dependence. Because the staggered-grid method defines stresses and particle velocities at different grid points, we preserve symm...

We study the ground motion simulations based on three finite-source models for the 2007 Mw6.6 Niigata Chuetsu-oki, Japan, earthquake in order to discuss the performance of the input ground motion estimations for the near-field seismic hazard analysis. The three models include a kinematic source inverted from the regional accelerations, a dynamic source on a planar fault with three asperities in...
متن کاملRelationship between High-frequency Radiation and Asperity Ruptures, Revealed by Hybrid Back-projection with a Non-planar Fault Model
High-frequency seismic waves are generated by abrupt changes of rupture velocity and slip-rate during an earthquake. Therefore, analysis of high-frequency waves is crucial to understanding the dynamic rupture process. Here, we developed a hybrid back-projection method that considers variations in focal mechanisms by introducing a non-planar fault model that reflects the subducting slab geometry...
متن کاملThe 1999 Hector Mine Earthquake: The Dynamics of a Branched Fault System
The 1999 M 7.1 Hector Mine earthquake ruptured a complex fault system with a branched structure in the north. This fault geometry and slip pattern presents a puzzle, because the northwest branch of this system should be in the stress shadow of the north branch, upon which nucleation likely took place. Through 3D dynamic models of this event, we show that the ability of rupture to propagate to t...
متن کاملThree-dimensional boundary integral modeling of spontaneous earthquake sequences and aseismic slip
[1] Fault processes involve complex patterns of seismic events and aseismic slip. This work develops a three-dimensional (3-D) methodology for simulating long-term history of spontaneous seismic and aseismic slip on a vertical planar strike-slip fault subjected to slow tectonic loading. Our approach reproduces all stages of earthquake cycles, from accelerating slip before dynamic instability, t...
